Buck is taken by force from his home at the beginning to be trained as a sled dog. His new life is full of struggle as he has to adapt to the cold conditions in Alaska and the Yukon for the sake of survival. Although at times it seems that Buck has lost all his trust in humans, he gradually gets used to the life of a sled dog and is often praised for his "strength worth of two dogs" by other people.
