Gilbert is the son of an affair between Auguste Beau and the wife of his elder step-brother, Anne Marie though he poses as Gilbert's uncle. He has a great influence on the young boy's life. He wants Gilbert to suffer so he will develop poetic sensitivity thus leading Gilbert to the state he is in.
