After changing hands many times Buck is finally acquired by John Thornton, a kind and loving owner. Thornton has a few other dogs aswell and treats them all as his friends rather than sled dogs, becoming especially attached to Buck who truly loves him. Later on he gets shot and killed by several robbers, an action which is soon revenged by Buck.
