Kuri Jikken Manga Kobo was founded in 1958 by Yōji Kuri, a multi-talented visual artist and recent graduate of the fine arts division of Bunka Gakuin. After two years illustrating manga and painting advertisements and calendars, Kuri expanded into animation in 1960 by establishing a filmmaking division within the studio. Seizing on the rapid spread of television in Japan in the early 1960s, the studio produced animated television advertisements and experimental short films relatively unencumbered by industrial or aesthetic orthodoxy.
